The executive leadership of both Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern have cleared a significant threshold toward consolidating the two institutions.

Jennifer Frum, the interim president of ASU and Jaimie Hebert, the president of GSU, have issued a joint memo indicating the proposal has received approval of a regional higher education association.

The leaders say the 'okay' represents the last major step necessary for the Board of Regents to sign off on the merger which is officially expected to happen in January of 2018.

Board members are expected to meet via phone next week to review the final recommendation for consolidation.

Below is a copy of the memo issued by the two presidents on Tuesday:

To the University Communities:

Today, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) approved our prospectus for the new, consolidated Georgia Southern University. This approval is a significant milestone in the consolidation process, and validates the tireless work of our faculty, staff and students from both institutions, who worked diligently to finalize these plans.

This approval represents the final step needed for the Board of Regents to review and grant authorization for the consolidated institutions to officially operate as the new Georgia Southern University. The board is scheduled to review the final recommendation for consolidation during a telephonic meeting scheduled for December 12.

The University System of Georgia envisioned a regional university that could better serve the students of Southeast Georgia with expanded programs and resources, and we believe our plans fulfill that vision. We are both so excited to see all of our labors coming to fruition.

We especially want to thank everyone again for their dedication and commitment during this process, which added the work of consolidation to their regular duties at each university. Your efforts have displayed the character of our institutions and our ability to work together and achieve great things.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jennifer Frum Jaimie L. Hebert
