Bluffton firefighter Walter Arlt has been awarded two very different accolades over the past few months, both locally and nationally, according to a release.
Arlt was named Firefighter of the Year by the Bluffton American Legion Post for "his tireless work as the Commander of the Bluffton Township Fire District Honor Guard Team and his unwavering commitment to the residents and visitors of the Greater Bluffton area through his efforts as a firefighter/EMT."
Most recently, Arlt was invited to a banquet in Myrtle Beach where he was given the 2018 Champion Award from the Special Olympics South Carolina for working with both the staff and athletes of the organization.
Arlt is a decoarted US Army veteran and has served 12 years with the Bluffton Township Fire District, according to the release.
“Walt is an amazing person and is always taking the lead in helping our community in ways far beyond the norm of firefighting,” stated Rick Cramer, Deputy Chief Bluffton Fire.
The department says they're proud to call him one of their own.
