The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team will be conducting a training exercise at Oglethorpe Mall Thursday at 7 a.m.
SWAT conducts these extensive training exercises multiple times a year in order to enhance their ability to rapidly respond to and resolve hostage, barricaded gunman, and active shooter situations.
Past training locations have included schools, churches and local businesses.
This training event has been planned for several months. It will last approximately two hours and will be completed before the mall is scheduled to open.
"We put them in those situations, make it as real as possible and so they'll make the right decisions when the time comes when something like that does happen," Lt. Daniel Flood, commander of SCMPD's SWAT team, said.
While there will be a heavy police presence at the closed mall, there will be no impact to traffic or surrounding neighborhoods from this training.
