The Hampton County Sheriff says four of his deputies were injured overnight Wednesday trying to arrest a man wanted for questioning.
It all started late Wednesday night when agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said they spotted Jay John Ruth and recognized him as someone they wanted to talk to.
Deputies say Ruth took off when they tried to stop him. During the pursuit, they say he left the road, drove through a yard and rammed into a deputy's car.
That deputy was injured as well as two others nearby, standing outside their cars.
One of them managed to fire off a couple shots at Ruth's fleeing vehicle.
The fourth deputy was injured at a second house where investigators say Ruth stole a second car.
The Hampton County Sheriff's Office, the Jasper County Sheriff's Office, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and SLED used tracking dogs and a helicopter to search overnight.
After a brief pursuit Thursday morning, Ruth was captured near the Islandtown community on Highway 63.
He is now in the Hampton County Detention Center and is expected to have bond hearing on the county charges later Thursday.
In a news conference Thursday morning, Sheriff T.C. Smalls thanked the public for its help, saying tips led them to find Ruth.
All of the injured deputies have been treated and released.
SLED continues to investigate.
