Hilton Head animal volunteer receives Jefferson Award
FOX 28 is a proud partner of the Jefferson Awards, a foundation that recognizes local heroes who help make their community better through acts of public service. For the month of January, FOX 28 is recognizing Margit Vaughn from Hilton Head Island for her volunteer work with the Hilton Head Humane Association.
For an animal lover like Margit Vaughn, the Hilton Head Humane Association is a home away from home.
“Oh I’m just one of many volunteers coming to, you know, enjoy just kitty cats and every four-legged friends [that] are here," she said.
Three days a week, for the past three years, Vaughn has helped animals find forever homes for some of Hilton Head’s forgotten furry friends.
“On one day last week, we had six adoptions, and all of us were just--I mean we were just over the moon," she smiled.
Vaughn spends her time connecting with the animals that come her way by building special bonds with them.
"The first is to not kind of over handle them. Just talk to them softly and you know kind of get familiar with- a little bit- with their demeanor," she explained.
Vaughn says having those connections makes it hard to say goodbye when the animals do find new families. But it’s all a process that she's proud to be a part of and encourages others to do the same.
“Look at the beautiful cats and dogs, and somehow your heart tells you to come back," Vaughn said.
