Two Beaufort County school employees arrested in sex and alcohol investigation

Battery Creek High school employees charged (Beaufort County Detention Center)

Two Battery Creek High School employees have been charged in connection with giving alcohol to minors.

Sheriff's officials tell us 23-year-old Akina Andrews, a media assistant at the school, turned herself in Monday afternoon and was charged with three counts of giving beer or wine to a minor.

Also charged in this case is Brittney Whetzel, 28, who teaches English at the school. She faces the same alcohol charges, as well as sexual battery of students charges.

Whetzel was arrested at her Lady's Island home Monday morning.

Investigators say the incidents happened on April 9 and 10 at a residence on Lady's Island.

Both women are being held in the Beaufort County Detention Center, waiting for their bond hearings.

Beaufort County School officials say Whetzel was put on administrative leave last week after the school district notified the Sheriff's office of potential criminal activity.

The school district says it is cooperating in the investigation.
