Chatham County to offer downtown workers free parking
Chatham County is doing something about the high cost of parking for its employees who work downtown.
Today the County Commission approved a new subsidy program for employee parking.
The County will provide free parking for employees who work in the J. Tom Coleman Courthouse, the Old Courthouse, the Pete Liakakis Building and the Human Resources building.
The free parking will be from Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is only available in the County's Montgomery Street garage and the City's Liberty Street garage.
It only applies to non-reserved parking spaces in those decks and is available to all employees except for department heads and appointed and elected officials.
Employees have to sign up for the benefit and need to know that the value of the parking benefit will be added to their taxable income on their W-2.
The non-reserved spaces will be available on a first come, first served basis starting January 1st.
