A resolution to rename “Runaway Negro Creek” on Skidaway Island is gaining traction in the Georgia Senate.

Sen. Lester Jackson sponsored Senate Resolution 685 to change the name of the creek to “Freedom Creek” instead. The proposal has advanced through the Senate Urban Affairs Committee.

“We need to replace this antiquated symbol with one that is more representative of the events of the 1800’s,” said Jackson, according to a press release. “We will be redefining history by a shining a light on the events that transpired at Freedom Creek and honor the movement of freedom.”

Jackson says the move comes after District 2 residents expressed concerns about the current creek name in 2017, calling it culturally insensitive.

SR 685 has now been sent to the Senate Rules Committee for consideration.
