It's been closed since the beginning of June, but drivers who are waiting for the bridge on Mills B. Lane Boulevard to reopen will have to wait a little longer.
City officials are delaying the reopening because contractors have found some more safety issues.
Engineers say they found some additional cracks and wear and tear on the bridge which could affect its structural integrity.
“We are asking people to please be patient a little while longer,” said Traffic Engineering project manager Barry Stanton. “We know it is an inconvenience, but we want to make sure the bridge is safe. We ask motorists, bicyclist and pedestrians to stay off the bridge during construction, it is for their own safety.”
City officials say some people have complained because they're not seeing work being done on the bridge, but they need to know the repairs are being done to the underside of the bridge, so they can't see the work crews from the road.
Mills B Lane will remain closed to thru traffic at the railroad overpass bridge between Erickson Drive and Ross Road.
Drivers will be detoured onto Ogeechee Road, Victory Drive and Montgomery Street for traffic headed east and west.
The bridge was supposed to open on Saturday, but now it's looking more like mid-September for a reopening date.
