Rail car catches fire during repair at International Paper

(Savannah Fire)

Savannah Fire extinguished a blaze Wednesday morning when a rail car caught fire, according to a release.

Crews were dispatched to the fire around 10:48 a.m. at Bay Street and Allen Boulevard. They say shredded cardboard inside the rail car ignited while it was being repaired at International Paper.

No one was injured in the fire.

Traffic on Bay Street was rerouted momentarily while firefighters used the closest hydrant, at Bay Street and Coach Joe Turner Drive, to extinguish the blaze.

However, crews were able to gain access to an alternate hydrant, allowing police to reopen the street.
