River Street free ferry service to expand
The free ferry that shuttles people from the Trade and Convention Center to River Street and back is going to be expanding its services.
The U.S. Department of Transportation is giving the Chatham Area Transit Authority $2.07 million to expand the ferry service further west on River Street, according to a news release.
The money will be used to build a ferry maintenance facility on Hutchinson Island and to build a new ferry dock on the west end of River Street, which is where two new large hotels are being built. One of them is the 419 room Marriott mega hotel that will be known as Plant Riverside scheduled to open sometime next year.
The free ferry now runs between the Westin and the Trade & Convention Center and two stops along River Street.
One is in the middle, where the riverboat docks, and the other is on the east end of River Street.
No word on when CAT plans to have the new ferry service up and running.
