Escaped Chatham County inmate captured in Effingham County
Matthew Laroche Sr. was found by deputies in north Effingham County around 6:35 p.m. Friday evening. Sheriff John Wilcher says it was determined, the inmate's son, Matthew Laroche Jr., aided his father in the escape.
The CCSO says they traced the truck back to Laroche Jr.'s home. Sheriff Wilcher says he suspects Laroche Jr. dropped his father off at a home in Effingham County in order to "get high on drugs". He was found shortly after taking in Laroche Jr. and both are now in custody.
Authorities are on the hunt for an inmate who walked off a work assignment in Savannah on Friday.
Chatham County Sheriff’s Office inmate worker Matthew Lee Laroche, Sr., walked off from a work detail at approximately 12:45 p.m. according to a news release.
Inmate Laroche was assigned to a work detail at the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office training facility.
Laroche stands 5’ 11” tall and weighing about 260 lbs.
He was last seen wearing a white and black striped jail uniform, the release said.
A review of the video cameras showed Inmate Laroche getting in a gray full sized pickup truck which is missing the tailgate part of the vehicle, according to the release.
The vehicle was driven by an unidentified white man. The vehicle was last seen traveling in the direction of Highway 17.
Laroche’s last known address was in Pooler. He was currently being held in the Chatham County Jail on various drug offenses, the release said.
