The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help finding a man from Hampton County wanted for stealing money as part of a home mortgage scheme.

Darnel Altonia Stokes, 46, is wanted on charges of felony larceny, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

His wife, Daisy Green-Stokes, 41, of Hampton County, S.C., was originally wanted as well, but has since been cleared and all warrants against her have been withdrawn, deputies say.

Police say Stokes allegedly accepted $500 from a Georgetown County resident to finance a new house but did not deliver the promised loan.

Darnel Stokes is accused of presenting himself as a licensed contractor working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help people obtain housing. He and his wife, Daisy, met with victims in Georgetown County and showed them property that he claimed would be USDA eligible, the release stated.

Darnel Stokes is described as 5' 9", 310 pounds and Daisy Stokes is 5' 3", 175 pounds, police say. Both are residents of Varnville, in Hampton County.
