Traffic stop leads to chase, fatal wreck in Port Wentworth

A traffic stop in Port Wentworth lead to a high speed chase and a fatal wreck Tuesday morning, according to a release.

Officers with the Port Wentworth Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Ga. 21 and Ga. 307 for a traffic violation around 11:08 a.m. They attempted to detain the driver for an outstanding warrant from the Metro Atlanta area, but police say he resisted.

The driver got back into his vehicle and drove off at a high rate of speed, heading south on Ga. 307. Shortly after, he struck the rear of a tractor trailer that was stopped and waiting to enter the Georgia Ports. He was pronounced dead on scene, police say.

The driver's vehicle caused the tractor trailer to crash into a second tractor trailer, according to the release. Both of those drivers were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

The Port Wentworth Police requested the Georgia State Patrol to respond and investigate the crash.

The identity of the driver will be released once next of kin has been notified.
