Truck drives into Ogeechee River following high-speed chase
The Effingham County Sheriff's Office is looking for two men in connection to an incident involving a traffic stop Wednesday morning.
Coleman Mark Hagan and Thomas Schmidt are wanted for questioning regarding the incident. They are urged to call ECSO at 912-754-3449
Sheriff's Deputy Karyn Witherington was on routine patrol near the Foxbow neighborhood on Highway 80 around 6 a.m. when she noticed a red Nissan truck with tags that belonged to a different vehicle.
Witherington tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled, according to the release.
She chased the vehicle down Old River Road and back toward the Ogeechee River, going up to 100 mile per hour. Then, the truck drove full speed into the river.
The driver of the truck was able to escape through the window, deputies say.
The Department of Natural Resources responded to assist as well as CCSO, Chatham Police, CC Marine Patrol and GSP.
