Family and friends are waking up to disturbing news after finding out that the 12-year-old boy who was shot while leaving a relatives' funeral on Saturday died in Memorial Hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

The Chatham County Coroner confirmed Tuesday that John Cooksey Jr. died following a shooting Saturday at Ricky Boyd's funeral. Boyd was the man accused of murdering 24-year-old Balil Whitfield on January 21st.

On January 23rd, U.S. Marshalls attempted to arrest Boyd, but shot and killed him after Boyd pulled out a BB gun.

An arrest has been made in the shooting death of Cooksey. Savannah Police say the teen arrested is only 15 years old.

Cooksey was a middle schooler at a Chatham County Public School but the school district has declined to say which school he attended, but assures FOX 28 that grief counselors are available throughout the day at the school.

A prayer vigil was held Monday evening for Cooksey in hopes he could recover from his injuries sustained in the shooting. He died less than 24 hours later.
