Wheelchair-bound woman among two rescued from fire at Port Royal apartments
A wheelchair-bound woman was stuck inside an apartment building that caught fire Thursday afternoon and had to be rescued, according to a news release from the City of Beaufort/Town of Port Royal Fire Department.
The fire at the Sea Island Apartments was called out at around 2 p.m. and firefighters arrived to find flames pushing from the windows of the four-unit apartment building.
Bystanders told crews that people were still inside the last apartment.
The rescue crew went inside and found a wheelchair-bound woman trying to find her way out. According to the release, they helped her to safety and a used thermal imaging camera to find another woman, who was just a few feet away.
Both women were treated for smoke inhalation and another man, who escaped from the building before firefighters arrived, was flown to the August Burn Center for treatment, according to the fire department.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Beaufort / Port Royal firefighters were assisted by the Burton Fire District, the Parris Island Fire Department, Beaufort County Emergency Medical Services, the Port Royal Police Department and the Red Cross.
