Yemassee woman arrested for defrauding neighbors

Yemassee police say a woman is in custody for allegedly defrauding neighbors in her apartment complex.

53-year-old Bertha Lee Owens of Yemassee was arrested by police for Breach of Trust w/ Fraudulent Intent, according to a news release.

Owens was employed at the Beaufort Housing Authority and assigned to the Yemassee Heights complex, the release said.

This event began in October of 2017. Owens took residents cash, deposited it into her account and then filed a fake deposit slip for the Beaufort Housing Authority to make it appear a deposit had been made, according to the release.

An arrest warrant was obtained earlier and Owens turned herself in to Investigators.

Owens was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center without incident and will await a bond hearing.

This case will ultimately be heard in Beaufort County General Sessions Court, the release said.
