Political Science Professor analyzes Beto O'Rourke's chances of becoming President

Political Science Professor at El Paso Community College, Sergio Saenz Rivera, said this very moment is the perfect time for Beto O’Rourke to run for office.

“I think this is the moment. He has the momentum and he has to keep the momentum,” said Saenz.

O’Rourke narrowly lost the 2018 senate race against Ted Cruz, but isn’t giving up, he’s now running for a bigger title, which is President of the United States.

“He’s an economic conservative, a liberal, I think he’s socially liberal and that combination can be very successful,” said Saenz.

Rivera said he believes it took him so long to announce the presidential run because of expenses.

“I think running for president is extremely expensive and last election each candidate spent about a billion dollars each,” said Saenz.

And while expenses will play a factor in his success, he also says current President Donald Trump serves as a big threat as well.

“The one thing that trump has to his advantage is that he’s been a master at playing the media, he was a TV personality before he was a politician so he knows what to say, when to say it, and how to say it to steer people’s emotions,” said Saenz.

Rivera feels O’Rourke could make a difference in the Borderland, but in order for him to win, it will take a lot of work.

“If he couldn’t win Texas, can he win the Mid-west? That’s a big question,” said Saenz.
